Episode 6: Reigniting Creativity: Small Steps to Overcome Creative Slumps

Do you have low motivation or are you in a creative slump? We've been there too. Let's talk about it.

In this episode, Cindy Ingram and Heather Doyle Fraser explore the challenges and nuances of starting or rekindling a creative practice, especially when motivation is low or when you're in a slump. How important is it to acknowledge and work with your current emotional and physical state rather than forcing creativity? Very! Recognizing where you are and allowing yourself to feel what's there on a daily basis can be the first step in re-engaging with your creative process.

Heather and Cindy cover a broad landscape in this episode while also providing depth in terms of what helps when you are struggling in your creative process. Here are some of the discussion points you will hear in this episode:

  • There is real value in taking small, manageable steps toward creativity, whether it's making tiny marks on a page or revisiting previous work. These small actions can help ease the pressure and allow creativity to flow more naturally if you are feeling stuck or uncertain.

  • Creating a safe and comfortable environment, both physically and emotionally is very important when it comes to nurturing a consistent creative practice. Simple things like sitting in a comfy chair, wrapping yourself in a favorite blanket, or having a favorite beverage nearby (water, cup of tea, coffee, etc.) can make your body feel safe, which in turn helps your mind to open up to creative possibilities.

  • Building on the discussion in Episode 5 of the podcast, remember that all learning in any area often begins with imitation. We learn by example in so many things—why would creative practices be any different? Whether it's copying someone else's doodles or playing familiar chords on a musical instrument, these actions are valid and important steps in building confidence and finding your own creative voice.

  • As creators, we often have the common bias toward doing things the "hard way." When you have a bias for hard, you believe that something is more valuable or worthy when it is hard and this isn’t always the case. Sometimes it's okay—and often more effective—to start with the simplest, easiest steps in order to build momentum and a sense of movement when you are on a particular creative journey.

Finally, Cindy and Heather encourage listeners to start small, create safe spaces for themselves, and take the pressure off the creative process. They invite you to join their upcoming program, The Spacious Creative: Compassionate Process and Practice, where participants can continue to explore these ideas in a supportive community.
