Episode 4: Big Ideas, Small Steps: Nurturing Creativity

how do you even start when you have a big idea that just feels too big

In this episode, we delve into the intricate relationship between creativity and self-trust, exploring vision, creative inspiration and intuition, and how any creative practice inspires more creativity.

We begin by discussing the vision. The big vision that wakes you in the night and won’t leave you alone until you embrace its call. But then, once you begin to give the vision some attention, often it morphs into something so big that it becomes overwhelming and almost undoable. The internal discussion often looks like this:

  • I have never done anything like this—how am I going to do it?

  • I am not good enough to bring this vision to life?

  • Where do I even start with this?

  • I will never be able to complete it?

  • What was I thinking and who do I think I am that I could actually bring my vision to reality?

  • I will do it when I have more experience and time.

When you have a big vision it is exciting but it can also be confusing. Sometimes once we embark on that big creative journey we face challenges related to whether the vision should grow to encompass something different or if it should narrow in focus. This leads to a broader conversation about how intuition, grounded in our life and other creative experiences, often provides the answers we seek as we move into self-trust and trust in our creative project.

Every relationship is built on trust—even the relationships we build with our creative projects. We emphasize the importance of nurturing a trusting relationship with our creative selves, building over time with our attention, enabling more profound creative expression. This, of course, is related to the value of the creative process itself, highlighting that the exploration whether or not an idea is ready to be pursued, regardless of whether it leads to a finished product. We challenge the notion that art must be grand or special, recounting experiences from visiting galleries where playful and experimental art shifted our perspective of what “art” looks like.

Through personal anecdotes, we share how engaging in creative practices has transformed our lives, providing a soothing, meditative outlet that offers both expression and comfort.
